이 2CD 패키지는 랩뮤직의 초기 형태라는 식으로 많이 언급되곤 하는 Last Poets의 1, 2집을 함께 묶은 버전입니다. 한 장 값에 두 장을 얻는 셈이지요.
랩의 기원은 이 Last Poets나 질 스캇 헤론 같은 뮤지션들의 스포큰 워드에서 찾기도 하고, 저 멀리 검은 대륙에서 미국으로 날아온 디제이들의 길거리 퍼포먼스에서 찾기도 합니다. 랩이라는 게 어느날 갑자기 생겨난 것이 아닌 만큼 무언가 딱 떨어지는 기원을 찾기란 불가능하겠지만 적어도 더듬어 볼 수는 있는 여러 갈래의 뿌리들은 분명 존재할 것입니다. 이 앨범은 그 뿌리들 중 하나입니다.
어떤 이들은 이 앨범을 재즈로 분류하기도 합니다. 또랑또랑한 읊조림(외침?)들을 제외한다면 이 앨범은 그저 훌륭한 타악 연주 앨범이라 할 수도 있겠지만 이 앨범에서 무엇보다도 중요한 것은 다름아닌 가사입니다. 흑인들의 인권과 사회 의식을 부르짖는 가사는 이후의 힙합 뮤직에 커다란 사상적 영향을 주게 됩니다. (하나의 예로, NWA의 명곡 Real Niggaz Don't Die의 도입부에서는 Last Poets의 'Die, nigger'가 흘러나옵니다.)
하지만 가사를 알아듣지 못하더라도... 끈적하면서도 활기 넘치는 퍼커션 연주와 신명나는 보컬 퍼포먼스만으로도 충분히 만족할 수 있는 앨범입니다. 음악적으로는 물론이거니와 역사적으로 중요한 앨범이니 한번쯤 시간 내서 들어보시는 것도 나쁘지 않을 겁니다.

그리고 이건 인터넷에서 긁어온 가사 해석본입니다. 어떤 분께서 해석해 놓으신 걸 그대로 붙여봅니다. 혹시 문제가 된다면 삭제하겠습니다. Last Poets의 앨범을 구입하시려는 분들께 조금이나마 도움이 되었으면 합니다. 데뷔 앨범의 3번 트랙 'Niggers Are Scared of Revolution'의 해석입니다.

흑인들(원래는 깜둥이지만 그냥 흑인이라 했습니다. 흑인을 비하하는 말투로 이들은 시작합니다)은 혁명을 두려워한다.
But niggers shouldn't be scared of revolution
하지만 그들은 혁명을 두려워할 필요는 없다.

왜냐하면 혁명은 변화의 다른 말
